Oral Thrush – Candidiasis

A group of microbes called fungus, specifically Candida albicans, causes oral thrush, a yeast infection in the mouth. This leads to a problematic condition known as Candidiasis.

A healthy individual possesses small amounts of Candida in his/her mouth. Presence of other microorganisms keep the Candida growth under control. However, illnesses, stress and medications can cause Candida to reproduce at a faster pace which leads to imbalance between healthy microorganism and consequently Candidiasis takes place. A white tongue having a thick coating is indicative of presence of thrush in a mouth. It is quite common in babies, elderly persons and patients having compromised immunity. Its occurrence may be triggered by; using medicines like antibiotics and steroid. Patients suffering from diseases like HIV and Diabetes are more prone to candidiasis.  During pregnancy, vulnerability of thrush increases. Taking probiotic edibles help balance the bacteria present in a digestive tract and reduce candida colonies. It is treated with antifungal medicines taken over 10 to 14 days.
